The Handle with Care Program Expands to 611 Law Enforcement Agencies and 563 School Districts throughout Missouri

The Handle with Care (HWC) program is designed to help children exposed to a potentially traumatic situation by ensuring they receive appropriate interventions to support their academic success and potentially divert them from entering Missouri’s juvenile justice system. But the Missouri Juvenile Justice Association (MJJA) faced challenges in expanding HWC due to limited staff and resources. To support efforts in securing additional funding and expanding the HWC program, the Missouri Overdose Response Strategy (ORS) team organized a convening in April 2023 with key partners, including the Missouri Fusion Center, MJJA and the Center for Education Safety. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of these partners, the HWC program has expanded to include new sites across the state of Missouri. With new funding from the State of Missouri, MJJA, in coordination with the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC), announced that the HWC program is now accessible to all 611 Missouri law enforcement agencies and 563 school districts. As the program gains visibility, more communities are reaching out to participate in the initiative.
